According to chronicles, Lord Buddha came to Mahiyanganaya in the 9th month after his Enlightenment to settle a dispute among local tribes. His presence brought peace—and laid the foundation of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

The Mahiyangana Stupa was initially built to enshrine a lock of Lord Buddha's hair and later expanded by kings such as Dutugemunu.
